Blaze hit a grand slam, Marte had 4 hits. Montgomery made an IMPRESSION. Great game all around (not you Martinez) Record: 10-11, 141 Games Left, 3rd in NL West
Both teams came into this series looking to make a statement in the NL West. Neither felt like they were playing to their potential. Personally, I think that’s more true for Arizona than San Francisco, but even Bay Area teams win sometimes. Arizona brought two new players to game two: Jordan Montgomery and Pavin Smith, both technically recalled from Reno. Ryne Nelson unfortunately took a trip to the Injured List, while Jace Peterson reaped the reward of his early season play... He was designated for assignment - it’s unlikely anyone takes him willingly when they can wait and let Arizona pay most of his paycheck.

[MLB] Ryne Nelson ‘a little stiff’ after taking liner off elbow by Steve Gilbert
Lefty Jordan Montgomery, who was in San Francisco on Thursday, will be activated in time to start Friday’s game in his team debut, and the D-backs will need to make a corresponding roster move. While that had figured to be lefty Logan Allen, who was called up prior to Wednesday’s game against the Cubs at Chase Field, they may want to hang onto him to start in Nelson’s place if he has to go on the injured list.
Allen was in the bullpen when Nelson got hurt and immediately started stretching, knowing that as the long man in the ‘pen he would likely get the call if Nelson couldn’t continue.

The $80MM man has a large list of restricted and injured list placements. Injury prone?
If you roam the comments on MLBTR (MLB Trade Rumors) and hit any article where Eduardo Rodriguez is mentioned, it is not that hard to find the same type of comment over and over again.
I admit, if you are looking for some impartial and positive feedback from a community, then MLBTR and their scorching comment section probably isn’t the best place to visit, especially on an Eduardo Rodriguez article visited by Detroit Tigers fans, but it is remarkable that a certain tendency can be seen in some Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers fans remarks, and that is the possible injury (and absence) probability of Eduardo Rodriguez.
I took a look at a few articles and comments on here and at inside the Diamondbacks, but I couldn’t find anything that might indicate that the pitcher is injury prone. Is there nothing to worry about or are we blind and has any other Collapse

TL;DR: Early season trends continue as mental defensive miscues, uneven bullpen performance, and lack of late game offense overrides good starting pitching. In case you went to bed at a reasonable hour or gave up in disgust after a seven run seventh inning rally by the Cubs, you may be pleasantly surprised to see the D-Backs miraculously walked off the game on a Randal Grichuk single in extra innings last night. I can hardly believe it myself and I was Facetiming with my parents for extra emotional support at the time. Tim wrapped up all the craziness so you didn’t have to watch and is worth the read if for no other reason than he deserves it after having to recap all that wackiness. You would also be forgiven for not realizing that there was a day game after such a late, chaotic, and cathartic victory. A wild ride capped with late inning offense sends the Serpientes home happy That was wild!
Going in, spectators were probably prepared for plenty of runs scored. One sports book set the Over-Under at 10 runs. This game more than doubled that amount of runs.
Tommy Henry took the mound for the Serpientes looking to make his final argument for staying in the rotation once Jordan Montgomery joins the big league club this weekend. His argument was less than convincing.
Henry started hot, getting three outs on four pitches in the first inning and then, with help from Tucker Barnhart doing his best Gabi impersonation to catch Christopher Morel stealing second, got through with only 14 pitches in the second. Kyle Hendricks’ first inning was just as effective, if not as efficient. His early season numbers have been less than Hendricks-like and Diamondbacks hitters were probably licking their chops after their disappointing output last night. D-backs Collapse

[MLB] ‘It shouldn’t have come to that’: costly wild pitch sinks D-backs by Steve Gilbert
There was a lot that happened in the game, but the wild pitch will be the one moment that sticks with the D-backs for a while.
It had been a frustrating night for the D-backs up until the eighth inning. Kelly wasn’t pleased with his command as his struggles with it, along with some tough at-bats by the Cubs, inflated his pitch count and forced him to depart after the fifth having thrown 95.
Over the first seven innings, the D-backs hit nine balls that had an exit velocity of 95 mph or greater, which is the definition of a hard-hit ball. Of those nine balls, only one resulted in a hit.

We stay in the NL Central Oh Mt. 500! How... mediocre it is, I guess. I wouldn’t say that this is a disappointing start to the year, but the fact that we have only won one series against a team not from Colorado is less than ideal. The biggest consolation is that one of those teams is only playing in the regular season because they have to before being given the NL East title, and the other team is the Yankees, who aren’t much less of a sure thing. The team from Arizona took care of business against the Cardinals, sending them to last place in their division.
We now face the team in second to last in the NL Central, but that says more about how competitive that division currently is, rather than the quality of team we be facing in the Cubs. Right now, four out of five NL Central teams would make the playoffs, the Cubs being one of them. Early days of course, but it’s not getting easier.

Who will Jordan replace in the rotation? Who were the heroes and villains of the past week for the Diamondbacks?
Spencer: Heroes are Henry and Nelson for showing they still have some potential. Villain is def Blaze’s fielding. It’s gotten so bad, I just assume a ball hit in his direction results in a runner on base.
ISH95: Villain is for sure Alexander. The fielding. The getting called out for running in the base paths. Almost doing it again in the first Cardinals game. Just brutal.
For hero, I’m actually going to go with Blaze Alexander slashing .295/.368/.471 with a home run, and a couple of runs scored. It’s coming from a .364 BABIP so probably not sustainable, but good to see from the rookie.

Logan Webb looked like a CY Young runner-up and Ryne Nelson was injured on a comebacker, making another long evening for a beleaguered bullpen. If you take a quick look at Logan Webb’s game logs and overall stats for the early season, you’d see the 3.80 ERA and think he’s been struggling compared to what you expect from the CY Young runner-up. But when you dig deeper, you only have one stinker of a performance, 5 runs allowed in 3.2IP against the Dodgers. Since then, 14 innings with only 3 runs allowed.
For the Diamondbacks is Ryne Nelson, coming off his best start of the year against the Cardinals where he allowed a single run across 6 innings that solidified his spot in the rotation with Jordan Montgomery returning this week.

The Diamondbacks are the better team. First, let’s put this series in context. The Diamondbacks are the better team and my expectation is that the Diamondbacks will win three games in the four-game series against the Giants.
Why are the Diamondbacks the better team? A few comparisons (in games through 14 April) follow:
Runs Scored per game (5.56 D-backs vs 4.31 Giants)
Position Player Wins-Above-Average, WPA (+0.5 D-backs vs negative 0.2 Giants)
Pitching: Runs Allowed Per Game (4.25 D-backs vs 5.06 Giants)
Pitching WPA (+0.4 D-backs vs negative 0.3 Giants)
Giants batters are slumping. Their runs per game fell from 4.9 (first eight games) to 3.8 (second eight games).
Diamondbacks pitching will likely improve with the debut of Jordan Montgomery.
Worth watching is former Diamondback Nick Ahmed.

I think you ought to know, I’m feeling very depressed... Well, actually, this is likely not a game that the Diamondbacks deserved to win, and that’s almost entirely on the offense. They went 3-for-35 tonight, managing just a Randal Grichuk double and singles by Jake McCarthy and Corbin Carroll over eleven innings. That’s not good enough, especially against a pitcher making his second career start, and who only has two pitches in his arsenal, a fastball and a curveball. You might as well flip a coin up there. Diamondbacks fans almost certainly remember the top of the 2015 draft, as the Diamondbacks took Dansby Swanson with the first overall pick. Since it’s been nearly nine years, you may need your memory jogged as to some of the other players taken in that draft. Here’s the SnakePit post-draft tracker. It wasn’t a good draft; just four players picked and signed have made it to the bigs. Of those, only two (Alex Young and Taylor Clarke) appeared for the Diamondbacks. I watched both this Zac Gallen start, and his last one in Colorado, and I'm kinda confused. Neither saw what I would call a classically "dominant" pitching performance from Gallen. Both games felt like he had to work hard to get through at least some innings. But over the two outings, he struck out 17 batters in 11 innings, allowing three earned runs. Those are Cy Young caliber numbers. I guess I should take comfort from the fact that Gallen is now 3-0 with a 1.64 ERA, despite it feeling like he hasn't unleashed 100% of his ability yet. Heaven help the rest of the league if Gallen does. This afternoon, through four innings you would have thought it was Miles Mikolas who had finished on the CY podium last year.

Ryne Nelson pitched an unexpected gem, and the offense did just enough Saturdays have been rough going so far in this young season, and realizing earlier this week that I was going to pull a Ryne Nelson start for my third recap, I was not overjoyed. In fact, I may have even been beginning to rough out a possible recap adaptation of a lengthy and dirge-like Samuel Taylor Coleridge poem, which I imagined I might title “The Ryne and the Aged Manager”. Happily, I didn’t need to use it, so it’s in my back pocket still for later.
So yeah. Ryne Nelson, he of the rather grotesque first start and the adequate but not inspiring second start, came into this game looking like the guy most likely to get bounced from the starting rotation once Jordan Montgomery joins us next week. In two starts, he was sporting an 0-2 record, and a fairly abysmal 8.22 ERA. He was facing off against one Kyle Gibson, the fifth man in the St. Louis rotation, who was off to a Collapse

Too soon? Maybe not... 20 games in, and we are beginning to see teams sort themselves out in the National League West. Meanwhile, the Rockies got off to a good start in defense of their title as the National League’s worst team, though so far they are facing a stiff challenge from Miami. In between, the Padres, D-backs and Giants are all there or thereabouts, with not a great deal to separate them. It’s all very much as expected in the division. This shouldn’t be a surprise. Last year, we found that after just 20 games in 2022, two-thirds of the eventual postseason teams were already in playoff spots.

Loss: $16 Million, Misplaced Trust. Ohtani is an example of misplaced trust, one of the ways that baseball players have suffered financial loss. Recently, his friend was employed by the Dodgers to translate. More significantly, for many years, Ohtani employed his friend as his manager and assistant. Sadly, that position of trust was used to financially harm Ohtani.

Ignoring his $700 million in future earning from the Dodgers, and ignoring his future endorsement income, Ohtani’s current net worth was about $50 Million. From that perspective, he lost 32% of his current net worth, which was significant.
