A look at who could make up the Diamondbacks’ next HoF Class A few years ago, my brother and I were having a conversation about who would be the next Diamondbacks’ player to get his number retired. My brother had argued, as he had the many times we had this conversation, that David Peralta should get his number retired. I always recoiled at the thought of retiring a zero-time All-Star’s number. His argument centered around how Peralta’s name litters the franchise’ all-time Top-5 leaderboard in just about every offensive statistical category. Beyond his exploits on the field, Peralta also had a magnetic personality that he turned into a real connection with the fans. The Freight Train was the soul of Diamondbacks baseball for nearly a decade. I didn’t agree with my brother about retiring his number, but I understood it.*

22 HRS AGO - Photo by Keith Gillett/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images
Can the D-Backs thread the needle between buying and selling? For the second straight season, the MLB trade market has been extremely slow to develop. It’s certainly partly due to the extra playoff spot that has allowed a larger swath of the league to hold onto hope of making it to the playoffs and then following in the D-Backs footsteps. This is also a period where pundits and baseball writers aplenty attempt to arbitrarily group teams into buyers and sellers, which might make for better material, but doesn’t always reflect the full reality of a team’s possibilities. With that in mind, I wanted to take a swing (pun intended) at a strategy that does both for three impending free agents for the D-Backs - or, more accurately, two unrestricted free agents and one mutual option. I also want to add a couple qualifiers: I know these trades would not be popular among the fanbase and I am by no means suggesting this is what the Collapse

Unsung Hero? Or just plain lucky? Bryce Jarvis is bucking traditional success in the bullpen and is on the path to one of the best bulk inning relief seasons in D-backs history. Bryce Jarvis probably didn’t expect to be an MLB player in the bullpen. Sure, he’s made some appearances out of the bullpen in his early college years - but drafted in 2020 out of Duke in the 1st round, the D-backs expected him to rise quickly through minors and take a start every 5th day. He had blemishes like every prospect; he struggled with command and there were questions about whether he could continue his velocity spike, but he continued to show good stuff and worked his way quickly through the minors despite traditional statistical struggles and ultimately made his debut with the big league club late in 2023 as a reliever. He talked with Inside the Diamondbacks about the position switch.
“They value me as a pitcher, no matter what the role is,” said Jarvis. Collapse

TL;DR: Timely hitting, excellent fielding, and one of the most exciting ninth innings this year combined for an incredible rubber match series winner. Through the first eight innings of this game, the headline might very well have read: “Isolated power not enough in tough, tight loss.” Instead, I can happily swap those headlines and report a happy flight home to end an excellent 4-2 road trip through Chicago and Kansas City. It’s not often you see an offense truly pick itself off the mat like the D-Backs did tonight. It also required some impressive timely hitting and more than a little luck.
For a team that is just under league average for home runs, the D-Backs have found their power stroke over the past two months that have led to decisive increases in their SLG from the low in May (.364) to their recent highs from June and July of .433 and .449 respectively. Unsurprisingly, that improved offensive output tracks exactly with the step up in Collapse

After a humbling defeat on Thursday night, the Diamondbacks found a way to overcome some persistent issues and to win handily on Friday night in support of Jordan Montgomery. Diamondbacks News
Arizona 6, Kansas City 2Jordan Montgomery had one of his better outings of the year. The offense stole multiple bases. Ketel Marte had multiple hits, including a two-run home run. The bullpen came through once Montgomery left the game. All around, a good win in response to a bad loss.
Montgomery ‘Pain Free’ Over Five Innings in Return from InjuryWould the real Jordan Montgomery please stand up? This sort of outing from the lefty is precisely what Arizona needs from his spot in the rotation every five days. He is a success story. What were the secrets of his success?
Yilber Diaz had a dream to be a professional baseball player. Circumstances caused him to step away from his dream of professional baseball. Two fortunate things helped him.
The first fortunate thing was Jhonathan Carrillo, who motivated him to get back into practicing baseball on weekends. When Diaz had developed sufficiently to impress, then Carrillo sent videos to baseball academies.
To make a long story short, the Diamondbacks’ scout (and a crosschecker) decided to admit him to their academy in Dominican Republic. However, it was March of 2020 and Covid stopped scouting activities. Yilber Diaz was stuck in limbo at the academy for 8 months.
The second fortunate thing was he worked hard (extraordinarily hard) to prepare, not knowing if he would ever get an opportunity.

You don’t get to see an interesting Pirates vs Diamondbacks series often, although we won’t see Paul Skenes pitch in Arizona this time. Just once were both teams “good” at the same time.
Ever since the Diamondbacks first set foot on MLB earth, the Pirates have had a winning record just 4 times. The Diamondbacks started playing in 1998 but didn’t encounter a Pirates team that would end the season with a winning record until 2013. The Pirates would actually be a rather good team from 2013 to 2015 right when the Diamondbacks were on their way to a couple of dreadful seasons.
As such, just once has it happened that we could get excited about a game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Pittsburgh Pirates. The one and only time we are writing 2018, when both the Diamondbacks and the Pirates made an effort to get into the play-offs. Both teams failed at the attempt, although they both ended that season with a winning record. The Pirates had an exciting Collapse

It was later confirmed that both Deyvison De Los Santos and Andrew Pintar were the players going to Miami.
For the D-backs, it’s the type of move Hazen has become known for in recent years, acquiring minor pieces on the fringes of established teams to hopefully lift the team into the playoffs and Puk fits that perfectly. While drafted as a starter, Puk has slotted into a relief role in recent years and flourished, including this season. He started the season as a starter but struggled to a 9.22 ERA Collapse

Jordan Montgomery picks up the win in his return from the IL. All eyes were on Jordan Montgomery tonight as he made his return to the Dbacks rotation after missing the past 3 weeks with right knee inflammation. Monty would not get a soft landing either facing a red hot Kansas City Royals team. Given Monty’s struggles in his previous outings before landing on the IL and his ERA over 6, I didn’t exactly have high expectations coming into the game.
The Dbacks offense came out dialed in to start the game against the Royals’ Alec Marsh as the first 3 batters reached giving the Dbacks bases loaded no outs to start the game. Christian Walker would then hit an absolute shot to right field and old friend Hunter Renfroe made an emergency over the shoulder catch to rob Walker of a bases clearing blast. Two borderline Wild Cards go head to head hoping to make some noise The 2024 Season
Arizona and Kansas City had wildly different expectations entering the 2024 MLB Season. Arizona was returning form a trip to the World Series with a young core and high priced free agents added. They’d retained some talent in Gurriel and bolstered the starting rotation that failed in the playoffs with Eduardo Rodriguez and Jordan Montgomery. Meanwhile, Kansas City similarly added to their rotation with Seth Lugo and Michael Wacha and was expecting to get a full season from 2023 Trade Deadline acquisition Cole Ragans.
Then...the season started and games actually needed to be played. The second half gets under way, with the draft and the wild-card race heating up. Any thoughts on the D-backs draft, or did picking 29th rob you of all enthusiasm?
Wesley: In terms of this draft, compared to other teams, the Dbacks did well. Compared to other Dbacks draft? I’m not as much of a fan. I don’t think you can even grade this draft fairly until the signing deadline, and even then, we won’t have a good grasp of how good/bad it is until 2027/2028 at the earliest.
Makakilo: Three thoughts:
Drafting Slade Caldwell was betting long odds. Perhaps encouraged by Corbin Carroll’s success, they hope Caldwell is another undersized player who will exceed all expectations. They could be correct; I’m optimistic that he will reach the Majors. Adding to the long odds, he was 18 years old and “one of the youngest players in the draft.”

Let’s look back and see if we can get any clues based on what happened last year. Arizona are likely going to be in a very similar position at the trade deadline this year, as they were in 2023. On 31st July last season, their record was a little better, at 57-50, but they were in a real dogfight for a wild-card spot. The D-backs had exactly the same record as the Brewers and Marlins, all tied for the third NL position. The Giants and Phillies were also within a game of that trio. With less than a week to go this year, the Diamondbacks find themselves going into play today, half a game back of the third wild-card spot, but with just three games covering the top wild-card Braves and the five teams behind them. It’s all very much to play for, and the right deal in the coming week could well be a difference maker.
Given this, I figured it might be instructive to look back at what deals Mike Hazen ended up doing in 2023. How did they work out? Do Collapse

Monday recaps return with a vengeance... Record: 51-50. Pace: 82-80. Change on 2023: -4.
It has been a while since the last time I got to recap a win for the Diamondbacks on Monday. It was so long ago [Chorus: “How long was it?”], that it came on a walk-off home-run by Pavin Smith. That was June 3, when they beat the Giants 4-2 at Chase. It’s not quite as bad a stat as that sounds, because the vagaries of the schedule mean there haven’t been very many Monday games for me to cover. Indeed, that victory was the only such game for the D-backs in June. But July saw a 5-4 loss to the Braves on the 11th, and tonight’s defeat in Kansas City runs the D-backs’ record - and mine - on Mondays this season to an ugly 2-8 mark.
I guess if there’s a positive, it’s that losing to an American League team is less detrimental in the standings than doing so to a National League outfit. Especially if it had been one like the Royals, with wild-card aspirations Collapse
